Is Molino Basin the Best Campground on Mt. Lemmon? Here’s Our Take.

Molino Basin Campground sits at 4,500 feet on the lower slopes of Mt. Lemmon, offering cooler temperatures, great views, and easy access from Tucson.

It’s one of the most accessible campgrounds on the mountain, making it a popular spot for weekend campers, hikers, and cyclists.

But is it the best campground on Mt. Lemmon? After spending two nights there, we have thoughts.

What It’s Like to Camp Here

Molino Basin is at a transition point between the desert and the forest. Saguaros give way to cottonwoods and oaks, and wildlife is abundant.

During our stay, we saw deer, owls, kangaroo rats, and more bird species than we could count.

The sites are well spaced, but this isn’t a campground for people looking for total seclusion. Catalina Highway runs above and below the campground, so road noise is noticeable, especially during the day.

At night, it quiets down aside from the occasional motorcycle or late-night arrival.

Camping Experience and Site Features

The sites are paved pull-offs with picnic tables and firepits. There are no hookups, no water, and no trash service, so campers must pack out what they bring in.

The Arizona Trail passes nearby, and hikers and cyclists frequently pass through.

During our stay, most of the campers were respectful, but one site ran a generator for 12 hours straight. Noise depends entirely on who your neighbors are.

The traffic and the occasional loud camper made it a different experience than the dispersed camping we usually prefer.

Who This Campground is Best For

Molino Basin is a good choice if you:

  • Want an easy-to-reach campground close to Tucson
  • Are looking for a place to stay during the cooler months
  • Don’t mind some road noise or occasional loud campers
  • Plan to hike or bike along the Arizona Trail

It may not be the best fit if you:

  • Want full hookups or drinking water on site
  • Prefer dispersed camping with no neighbors
  • Need absolute quiet at night

Would We Camp Here Again?

Probably. It is a good option for a quick weekend trip, but the road noise and occasional generator noise keep it from being a top-tier camp spot for us.

It’s scenic, well-maintained, and convenient, but if you’re looking for total peace and quiet, you may want to camp farther up the mountain.

If you’ve camped at Molino Basin, let us know your experience. Would you camp here again?
